right now i sort it by jeans, whites, towels, and gentle cylces. but if i wash anything that is all black in cold water with clothes that aren't black, will it color the other clothes, even if it is washed in cold water?

I separate my whites and delicates, but wash everything else together. Usually, after something has been washed several times, it won't color the other clothes anymore.

Cold water will help prevent a lot of fading, so I would just keep up what you're doing.

My sorting goes like this:

~Delicates (just the nice undies, basically)- cold wash, short delicate cycle, hang dry
~Clean whites (t-shirts, towels, socks, etc)- hot wash, bleach
~Dirty whites (dirty dish rags and cloths, mop head, etc)- hot wash, long cycle, bleach
~Non-bleachable whites (ie: items with a colored collar or trim, etc)- hot water, Javex 2
~Light/medium colors- warm wash, regular cycle
~Darks (red or black items, dark denim)- cold water, short or regular cycle depending on how dirty they are

Most items fall into the 'colors' category so all the other loads are usually small.

Your black clothing should not bleed after the first wash. When I do laundry i try to minimize my loads. I separate them darks including jeans in one pile , whites & tan in another pile , And gentle cycles in another. If you wash your darks and colors in cold water you should be ok. no bleeding should occur.
