We'd like to find an inexpensive clean hotel outside of the park but we have a family of 6... any suggestions????

It isn't outside the park, but I recently enjoyed a stay at the Breakers Express. It is very much like a Holiday Inn Express. It isn't fancy, but the prices were okay and it was very close by the park. Go on the Cedar Point website to check it out.
If you don't like that, try contacting some chains and ask the distance from their Sandusky locations to the park. Do not try any non-chain hotels. They are really awful.

If there is a Baymont stay there! Whenever we travel we try to find one. The are reasonable and offer free breakfast in the morning.

There's an EconoLodge right there. I don't know about 6 people in a room, but it's pretty cheap (and clean) overall.
