I live in Franklin, and travel all around the state with my job. I would have to say the asheville area is probably the most convenient and cost effective. Work is plentiful if you are a white collar professional or in the service industry. Macon County and Watauga County (boone) is full of jobs if you are in construction, however Watauga county is also very expensive in the housing area. Another excellent choice is Waynesville, which is in Haywood county and about 20 minutes from asheville or Hickory which isnt technically in the mtns but only a few minutes away.

AS the other person mentioned, Brevard is good, so is Asheville. Anything in the Boone, Blowing Rock area is real nice. Also, the Area Near Cherokee is nice, Towns such as Waynesville, Bryson City etc are very nice.
