My Mom sat me down when I started my period and explain everything using a book called The ABC's of the Human Body. It explain everything in depth and it also has pictures that your daughter can use to get to know what exactly is causing this.

The other posters are dead on---I've heard nothing but good about "IMM"
One book you may want for your own reference, and to hand over on a bit-by-bit basis (since you know the kid best)---
Guide to Getting it On, by Paul Joannides (Goofy Foot Press). This book has gone into 4 editions at present and is in over 10 languages; it's probably the best general-purpose book on human sexuality I've ever seen (FWIW, I'm a nurse with 2 degrees in psych).
The only reason I'm _not_ suggesting just handing it over flatout to the young'un is that the author is QUITE thorough, pulls no punches, and there are illustrations of People Doing Things. Tasteful ones, but, quite clearly, they are Doing Things.
The chapter on explaining sex to kids and the glossary is probably worth the price of the book, though, and some other parts may be good to read together, as she gets older. (Or you can "casually" leave it out, in case you're too embarrassed to be upfront...and you feel that it's important she learn things, never mind nekkid people. Your call.)

Judy Blume's 'Are you there God, It's Me Margaret.'
Not scientific, but a classic that is one every girl reads.
