I have already read a book base around that call Blink, by Malcom Gladwell. It is very true. I saw it all the time. When I was in my punk phase, I would approach someone to ask a question, and phrase it as politely as possible. Even though I would approach them with a friendly smile, use words like excuse me, may you, please, and thank you, I still got terrified responses. There was another time, where I went into a computer store in torn up ratty old clothes, (I was doing yard, and house work). I stated I wanted to buy some parts for a computer. The salesman was a little snide, but dealt with me. But the time I was done, his jaw was about an inch from the ground... I had picked up $1900 in parts. I had failed to mention that I was buying pretty much all the parts in needed to make a computer, but all he saw was a some guy that came in for a few small parts. Yes people do it all the time. I have the body build, that when we get a new supervisor where I work, that THEY call ME sir. My personality eventually over rules, and they start calling me by name. So I as I said at the beginning, yes it is very true.

The article was an interesting read. In opinion, it is my belief to trust myself with experience to guide my trusting of individuals. I can summarize with technique I use to help me in my decision/s when I have recognized commonalities of interest. My personal technique is somewhat like small quizzes...or test/s if you will...
which I keep simple and small, once I feel comfortable to do that. This will show me if, I can depend on them in their support or not. If the tests fail, due to continual excuses, I am aware that I cannot depend on them or trust them with much more serious events that may have required their commitment of participation for whatever the event. Thanks for asking.

The way to have some sort of judgment is simply by getting to know them. How long? I do not know.
People have been married for 25 years and thought that they knew everything about each other then it turns out that one of them is cheating. What does that mean?

The only way you can truly tell is to put them to the test. Share something with them and see if they tell everyone else.
It really does not matter though, because people can change, they can be trustworthy today and a snake tommorrow.
But you gotta find the best people you can to share your life.. Grrr... I hate it...

I think you just need to give them a chance...or two. Time and experience are a big part of answering that question.
