What were the important reults of the Lewi & Clark expedition?

It provided a minimal, but accurate overview of what lands were to the West of the Mississippi River. At that time, they were looking for the rumored river to the West Coast but ran out of river and just about everything else after a couple of years.

At least those lands that were traveled, were surveyed and provided a basis for later explorations. The next major survey was the Mississippi River which was done by a young Army Lt. named Robert E. Lee.
