Thank You man. I feel the same way. When you have poverty wars and all these troubles down here on earth, there is no point going into outer space looking for jack s*hit. And i don't care what little NASA has done for us. I would rather end poverty and have peace than take what inventions or discoveries NASA has made. There are plenty of troubles here on earth that could be fixed with the kind of money that is spent on that retarted NASA

The point of NASA is to explore outer space, they deal with very little on earth. I think your question should be, Shouldn't we stop giving NASA money? I don't think so. This is a very rich country, most poor people are poor because of their own choices in life, it's not our job to give them money and mooch off of hard working people...that's what communism was. We need to give money to programs like NASA because for a lot of reasons, humans need to explore their surroundings and the benefits from their inventions really do make a huge impact on our society.

If only you had any idea what you were talking about. Thank you Jay S for doing your research. He is absolutely right about spending. And if you had any idea what NASA has done for the betterment of your life you would never ask this question.
Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of employees and contractors that depend on NASA employment. Would you rather those people be put out of a job...

Thanks to Jay S for the stats and he is right on about money spent on research and development is always well spent. To top it off, NASA exists on Earth and its money is spent on projects that pay for real jobs here on Earth. Maybe if NASA was just burning up money or putting money on the shuttle to dump into the sun would you have a point.
Research improves the human condition. Period.

Frankly, there really is no money time and effort truly put into the study of space. relatively, the amount of money we spend on things for Earth is truly enormous. the study of space is a static science being conducted by only a real handful of people from across the world. more is spent studying things like biology, funding war, putting money into our schools, and things like that. there is really nothing to worry about.

Yes, I do. I think exploration and research are among the most productive uses of our tax dollars, and I'd like to see their budget increased. It's because of NASA we have safer commercial aircraft. It's because of NASA we have integrated circuits. (Who do you think paid for the research to make them commercially viable?) It's because of NASA that we have weather satellites that spot and track tropical storms, communication satellites, GPS, and on and on.
The NASA budget is really quite small compared to the Federal budget as a whole.
For Fiscal Year 2005:
Total Federal Budget - $2,400 Billion
NASA Budget - $16.2 Billion
Social Security - $510 Billion
Medicare - $290 Billion
Medicaid - $188 Billion
Other Mandatory - $320 Billion
Defense - $429 Billion
The Department of Education alone consumes $57.3 Billion. Out of that, $14.5 Billion goes out as state grants, grants to states that have their own taxing authority!
I believe we spend more than enough on other programs.

If they did, we'd certainly be the ones losing a great resource. They'd also need to change their name, wouldn't they. *Think* about it for a second, please? There are other companies that focus on the efforts you mention so why should we have them change their tasks to space and flight instead?
Also of note: If Stephen Hawking is correct, it'll be NASA who might just save the entire race of mankind, or what's left of it in the not so distant future.

Cool question! It reminds me of "America should take care of it's citizens before trying to police the rest of the world."
I think there is a lot of virtue in both sides of both issues. Ultimately they ideal of each is important, though. One could liken it to Columbus (or a less buttt-headed explorer) looking for new land (to exploit, but anyway...). Striving for the ideal of expanding human knowledge and capability produces such. And we are richer in some aspect just for having new frontiers to explore.

I think that we should spend a whole lot more money and time in space and a whole less money in wars, army and weapons.
