Just wondering what people think.. Personally I think he's a solid defender, but I think when you have a player like Steven Gerrard in your squad, you make him your captain. He is probably the most inspirational and maybe the best England player since Alan Shearer.. any thoughts welcome!

Stevie G IS a better candidate. But seeing him fluffed his penalty against portugal and then dissing Ronaldo as if the loss was Ronaldo's fault has lower his stock value a little bit. If he said that it is his fault, and owns up apologize for missing the penalty (together with Frank and Jamie), maybe he'll come out as the captain.

Postscript : I think he is the co-captain now, so he is not that far off.

Both John Terry and Steven Gerrard would make excellent captains, but Gerrard has had a few injuries, and is probably likely to miss more games. So maybe its best its Terry for the sake of stability.

I think that John Terry wasnt the right choice for captain of england, it should have been Micheal Owen. I mean yeah he isnt always that consistent but i think that he has been a great england player for years and is at the peak of his career..
but i could see why terry was picked, he is a great player and leader but i think that it may put more pressure on him and his performence may drop. and terry is only an above average defender
who hasnt been around for that long really.
i think that stevie gerrard would have been better; i mean look what he's done for liverpool!! also i think that gerrard is more motivating and can talk and lead the squad better. having said that they terry will be a good captain, better than becks, but not as good as gerrard or micheal!!! also he plays for Chelsea which on its own is a reason to not be picked for captain.

also with lennon on instead of becks england will be a lot better

as you said..ya terry is a great defender
also any one would like to have steven on his side
He chose john terry because he did much more for England than gerrard
terry can change a game 180 degrees to the oposite direction it was going to i mean yes gerrard is great at champion league and he is a great captain for liverpool..but it is the international matches which clearly show the better player...i think gerrard as vice captain is better .....until terry retire gerrard ofcourse by this time would have proved and will be ready to captain English national team...he just need much more experience than he has...

CONGRATULATIONS TERRY AND GOOD LUCK

both have good experiences as captains. but Gerrard wud have been a better choice since he is an attacking mid fielder n thinks aggresively which can help the england team.even i answered this question b4 3 weeks and saw dat the asker got an owerwhelming reply wid atleast 80% saying Gerrard was the best choice.

Yes I think Terry was the right choice purely for his inspirational leadership qualities. He backs out of nothing, scores goals and is England through and through. Gerard is alright but not a leader in the same way and his game is erratic, Terry's isn't. By the way I'm a Manchester United fan. Wish we had him next to Ferdinand instead of that pudding Silvestre.

no... Stevie G should have been chose, terry should be Co-captain or whatever

or maybe even Owen Hargreaves, he was the only British player that actually did anything during the WC

Terry is also very friendly with the players, since he needs to communicate well then he has to be the best pick.

both would fit right as captain. so, as long as it was terry or gerrard (who is vice captain). So, i'm good with mcclaren's decision. i think terry will do well as the new captain.
