Umm x does not equal .5....your answer will be somewhere between 1 and 2. Plug your variables into the formla. If the quadratic equation is ax^2 + bx + c = 0. Then A=2, b=-1, and C = -7.

The quadratic formula is. x = -b +/- √b^2 - 4ac / 2a ...plug in accordingly. By just plugging the numbers 1 and 2 into your original equation 1 was too low and 2 was too high, so it must be in between. Good Luck.

x = -1 ± √1² - 4(2)(- 7)/2(2)

x = - 1 ± √1 + 56/4

X = - 1 ± √57/4

x = - 1 ± 7.549834435/4

x = - 1 ± 1.887458609

2x^2 - x - 7 = 0

x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)

x = (-(-1) ± sqrt((-1)^2 - 4(2)(-7)))/(2(2))
x = (1 ± sqrt(1 + 56))/4
x = (1 ± sqrt(57))/4
x = (1/4)(1 ± sqrt(57))

x = (1/4)(1 - sqrt(57)) or (1/4)(1 + sqrt(57))
