first, begin by using a mild soap to clean your floors. Unless your feet are extremely contaminated or you constantly slop food on the floor, you're just cleaning up dirt. I use dish soap and hot water. When I'm done, I give the mop a good rinse under a hot shower until all suds are gone. Then, leave in an open area where it can dry. As Americans we have a tendency for overkill when we clean. Just go back to the basics.

Have you heard of Dettol ?
It is as strong antiseptic cleaner.
Soak mop in dettol and water for a few hours, rinse well and leave mop outside to dry thoroughly. Always rinse the mop well after using and let dry upside down.
If you still have the smell try soaking in vinegar and water and rinse well. (otherwise replace mop head)

mop heads are not ment to last forever, change it out, and don't allow the mop head to sit in the bucket in between moppings, after mopping the floor rinse it out well then make sure it is wrung out, so that there is just a little moisture that can easily evaporate between moppings store the mop head up, this will prevent the mildew smell, and help your next mop head to last a bit longer than a month.

Try soaking it in bleach water for a few hours. Don't put too much bleach or leave it too long or it will rot the strings of your mop.
GOOD LUCK!!

you could soak it in diluted bleach or vinegar. bleach will kill the germs that are making the mop smell and vinegar is a good odor neutralizer. make sure it has a chance to dry out well before putting it away (i hang mine up outside for a couple days). if it has one of those mess free wring out things it is on it, keep it up while its drying.

First rinse the dirt out, then rinse it with bleach, then ring it out and finally, let it dry mop head up, not down.

Buy a new mop. Make sure it's not the same as the last one you bought.
