Due to new planet guidelines Pluto is no longer a planet, and we are a 8 planet solar system now.

Just a little. At least it isn't being considered just some large asteroid / comet that got stuck in the suns orbit. It's going to be called a plutonian object / dwarf planet. Because of Pluto there is a new class of celestial bodies, which is pretty cool.

I am uncertain if I believe in astrology, but I have always felt that it was interesting, and I wonder now if astrologers are going to change the way they do horoscopes because of this.

Well that's all I have to say. Have a good day everyone! ^_^

Sad? No not really, but maybe a little surprised. I've been aware of this debate for some time now and had though that most likely they would come up with a more solid definition of what a planet is, one that would exclude Pluto if it had been discovered today. But i had figured they would 'granadfather' Pluto in, seeing as it has been considered by most a planet for many years now.

New guidelines? By whom were they established? And when?

So what, then, is Pluto? (Anyone can PM me, if you know the answer).

I surmise that it's a comet. I did a research paper on Pluto once, and some scientists were divided as to whether Pluto was, in fact, a planet, or a comet.

It is a little bit sad, IMO. It's kind of strange, because this doesn't change Pluto- only our terminology that we use to define it.

Well whats the guidelines? I didn't know this until now and yes I am a little sad. 8 stupid planet! I'm used to having 9 and that's what we deserve. Planet guidelines?

yes of course, I loved astronomy as a kid, and grew up believing that our solar system had 9 planets. Now there are 8 planets, its so weird saying that, but hey it might be called a planet again some day.

SAD? Yes deeply. Pluto and I where very close...well close in spirit but actually we lived very far away from each other making it hard on our relationship. At times I would wonder if Pluto was even a planet but she assured me she was. Now to realize that she's not makes me glad I ended it with her a long time ago.
!?!?
It makes me sad that there's a International Astronomical Union that believes they can demote or promote celestial objects as though they where God's in a sandbox. What? Yeah I said it.

Yeah...I miss the good times when our solar system had 9 planets. It is still called an ice dwarf, but no planet. *sigh* I sad.

no

because nobody knows or cares about the "guidelines"

it will take years and years before most textbooks are updated (if they ever are) and by then we might have re-redefined the solar system

its a funny world, and a funny solar system

my solar system still has 9 planets

but then, I'm sort of sold on Newtonian physics also

It'll be hard to get used to, but there are supposedly 3 more celestial bodies that could become considered planets in the near future.
