and I saw on the front page that in the news, Pluto has officially been demoted from planet status to an "ice dwarf." Now, only 8 planets remain in the solar system supposivly. Is this true?

For once an "is it true" question appears to be so. It's in all the news sites. Unless you want to organize some kind of campaign, the IAU is likely to stand by their decision.

Yes, it's true, with the exception that Pluto's new designation is not "ice dwarf," but "dwarf planet." It is also icy, as it happens.

I don't think they would write about it unless it was true, but what might be true today might be false tomorrow so you never really know about this
