NYers love soccer. We have a diverse market with a lot of interested fans. We have 8 million ppl in NYC and 22 million in the metropolitan area. Why can't the MLS and RBNY attract fans?

I have many theories, but i really want to hear yours...

Many reasons...

1. Joga Bonito.

Simple as that. Foreign countries put alot more passion into football because it is a central sport in their culture. Therefore most people that love football in this country look elsewhere for good games.

2. Majority of Americans don't like football for a variety of reasons that don't make much sense. They don't see that they are the only country that have not caught on to the football being the most beautiful sport in the world thing.

3. We don't have good players. Look at other clubs, FC Barcelona for instance: Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Messi, Deco, Puyol...well there whole roster. and what do NYRB have? Djorkaeff? Buddle? That's all I can think of, we don't have players worth seeing. Ronaldinho uses the pitch as a canvas or instrument that he can mold to make beautiful playing, NYRB players play like it's just a sport nothing more.

4. I recently went to Giants Stadium to see FC Barca play NYRB. And I can say quite honestly, that i rather watch Ronaldinho play on TV anyday than have season tickets to NYRB games. They are so boring, and they're not very good. They were alot better than expected...but that's still not good.

What NYRB and MLS need is more marketable players that play the game beautifully. I only see a few players worth watching, one of them being Adu, who really screws up but has the potential. I, personally, can't wait until he smartens up and leaves this country to play for a good club!

I think they still play in Giants Stadium. The league is growing slowly and that is better than NASL. If RBNY can get a soccer-specific stadium in New York proper, then the stadium would fill. The Red Bulls aren't playing well, but when they improve under Coach Arena, the fans will show.

Soccer in my opinion will never be "big" in the US as a professional sport simply because of advertising. Soccer matches are constant, there are no time-outs, thus inhibiting advertisers from marketing their products or services on television because there is no time for commercials! Any sport is a business and if the business can't get funding from advertisiers, then it's tough to compete for fans!

They need a big name figure such as David Beckham or Ronaldo to come play, both have expressed interest or said they would. Beckham particularly, he said he would like to play in NY or LA, most likely LA because he wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. The key is get a big name and it will attract more fans especially in that market, winning helps too.

The level of play is no where near the level of the top leagues around the world, in my opinion. I would rather watch an EPL game on cable than watch the Red Bulls in person.

I do still watch MLS games on tv from time to time though.

Because they suck. Look at the standings. Here in D.C. we have plenty of fans we got em sitting up in the nosebleed section.

D.C. United = MLS Champs
