I had 20 years of absolutely perfect credit. When I informed my husband in Oct. 2000 that I was filing for divorce, I was prepared. I was debt free, I paid all my bills and paid off all my debts. Unfortunately for me I was unaware that my ex would set me up and I would be arrested that night. He smiled an evil smile as the police handcuffed me and took me to jail. All it took was that one night in jail he had control of everything, I was let out in the morning and at the hearing I was placed on the no complaint list. He, my ex destroyed all my ID, took my credit cards and withdrew the maximum cash advance's they would allow and closed our joint bank account. All the checks bounced that I had sent out to pay our bills. Now, I can't get a loan and I can't have a bank account. At present I have retained one attorney for the restraining order hearing, one court appointed attorney for the harrassment charge and now I need to come up with a 2500.00 retainer for the divorce attorney.

I'm sorry I didn't see your previous question. The first thing you ALWAYS do is protect yourself financially! Before you make the announcement about divorce plans you close any existing joint OR even individual accounts that your spouse may be able to find paperwork on. Then you open new ones he doesn't know about. Go without credit cards and inform the people at your bank that you are going through a messy divorce and they need to take extra caution about access to your accounts. Now that its done I'm afraid you have no choice but to start over again. What did he have you arrested for and how did he manage to accomplish that? Theft is theft, if he stole your credit cards and made the maximum withdrawals he should be held accountable for that. My bf's ex did that to the tune of $8000 and we managed to get it cleared up, although it took two years and TONS of hassle she eventually signed affadavits of responsibility and now she is responsible for them and we can remove the charges from his credit rating. If the bills were paid out of the joint account that he closed he is equally responsible for that. I would recommend that you pick up an extra job to earn the retainer money, you need someone to help you out of this mess. It shouldn't take that long to earn $2500 especially if its from a second job and ALL that income can be put towards it. I wish you the best of luck, hang in there, this will pass and things will get better and you will learn lots of valuable lessons about how to protect yourself in the future.

Wow. My condolences, you've been through a lot. Sounds to me as though the man may be pure evil. Can you file complaint against him for destruction of personal property (ie: your credit)?
I would consult an attourney re: whether or not he can be held legally liable for the damages that resulted from him, while you were being detained. (I assume it is also his fault you were detained?) Depending on the cash amount and the severity of damage (which sounds like a substantial lot) Perhaps you can file criminal complaint against him? Fire with fire!
Fortunately, for you i hope, it is on record that you were detained at such a time, and so the transactions that took place could only have occured because of him. Thus, proving your innocence, yes? Especially if you had perfect credit prior to that day, it could prove that his actions were intended only to harm you.
My heart goes out to you. Keep strong. People like that get what they deserve in the end, whether you witness it or not. (but i hope you get to see justice served)

What about Legal Aid? Call your local Bar Assn. and ask about it. Can the bank document or you document how much you deposited into the account, ie. paystubs, etc.

It also depends on what the charges your husband had you picked up on how well things may go. I do wish you well. Hidesight is always 20/20; when I was preparing to escape my first marriage, I stockpiled my money in a separate account about which he knew nothing.

Take one thing at a time with the different court cases.
Try legal aide services in or near your area. They may provide some assistance for you.
Also try some woman organizations as well. They may have some advice/ services for you.
I pray that justice will be accomplished for you and that you will rise above this evil of a male to find a enriching life.

get him back...fill out a credit card application in his name and do the same back. Take cash advance and retain your attorney. If the money in your joint account is gone, he will be responsible for paying you half. What state do you live in?
