If system restore is switched on, but not working, there's nothing you can do to get it back or retreive the old restore points.
You can get software such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image that let you take an image of your hard drive and use that to restore to an earlier time but you will lose anything that you had saved after the point that you imaged the drive.
If you have a virus or other malware that has invaded system restore and altered it, you cannot get it back; because you have to turn off system restore before you try to remove malware. Malware hides itself in system restore, so when you think you've got rid of it, it can re-install itself.
If you have malware then you turn off system restore, then start in safe mode and run an anti virus, plus something like Ewido anti trojan and Ad-Aware SE Personal.
As for the internet connection, we need more info to help. Do you mean that you connect using Explorer? (e.g. using folders rather than Internet Explorer?) Thats really not recommended. There's a trojan called Explorer.exe thats a real nuisance. Only use your web browser to connect to the internet.
So what actually happens when you try to connect using Internet Explorer or Firefox? Post back with more info.

A few things to check - yes some virus's and spyware can effect your system restore - so yes do a scan within the safemode
Also check these things - firstly check to make sure that the system restore has not be turned off > right click on my computer > then properties > then system restore > make sure that the box saying 'turn off the system restore for all these drives' IS NOT ticked
Also select each drive and then click the settings tab - ensure that each one is set to max and is monitoring
The system restore also takes up a portion of you hard drive - make sure that you have a enough space on the hard drive to allow this
also click on start then run and type
services.msc
look down the list for - system restore services - make sure that this is either set to automatic or is manual - automatic is preferd - if not double click on it then reset it to manual
Follow these steps and this will usually sort the problem out
hope this helps

what type of computer is it. most nowadays have a phone number you call and theyll tell you how to fix it. did you try making a new access point and connecting manually under the start menu. if you dont have verizon dsl, then theres no point trying to get the internet back
