We used to park at the end of the airport and watch the planes take off over head. It's pretty cool especially if they are only a few feet away like our local airport.
Bike and walking trails are usually free.
Play blackjack or poker for matchsticks.
Explore historic parts of your town/city - take a picnic lunch, cheaper than eating out.
Organize a theme night - invite all your friends to bring DVD's of their favourite TV shows, Lost, Grays Anatomy, 24 whatever you are into. Have some friends bring the DVD's and others could bring potluck dinner.
Volunteer your time at a local hospital reading to sick kids, or if they have a reimbursement for gas/mileage, drive patients to treatment.

We like to play a game with dice that we call 10,000.
You have 5 dice that you roll. You have to score 1000 points all together in order to "get on the board" (start keeping your score). The only numbers to score are 1 and 5. 5's are 50 points each and 1's are 100 points. All other numbers don't count. You keep the dice that are points and roll however many you have left. Say in your first roll you have a 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, you would have 150 points, set the 1 and 5 aside and try to roll more points with the other three. Say you then roll a 1, 1, 3, you would add 200 points for each of the 1's for a total of350 points, roll your last and if it is a 1 or 5 you get to add that to your score and then roll all five again until you bust (roll with no 1's or 5's). You get extra points for certain combos. Roll 1, 1, 1 and you get 1000 ponts. 2,2,2 is 200, 3,3,3 is 300, 4,4,4 is 400 5,5,5 is 500 and 6,6,6 is 600. If you roll 4 of a kind it is doubled. 1,1,1,1 is automatically 10,000 and you win the game. 2,2,2,2 would be 400 (2,2,2 is 200 add one more 2 and it doubles to 400. 3,3,3, 3 is 1200, 4,4,4,4 is 1600, and so on.
combos of straights are 500 each, 1,2,3,4,5 and 2,3,4,5,6 are both 500. It sounds like a lot to remember but you only have to play for a little while to get it and it will keep you busy for a while.
