There's a little thing called separation of church and state. The founding fathers like the concept. Check out the constitution, specifically the first amendment dude. Don't quite understand the drift of your questions; our federal government is still a secular government, not a theocracy, but it has taken a turn toward that. If you vote for candidates who will not mix religion and government, you'll be doing a good deed.
As to your last question about democracy in the middle east, we tried to bring it to them at the point of a gun, which is a little ironic, wouldn't you say?

Because the majority only get to decide within the bounds set by the Constitution, as interpreted by the courts.
The people don't get free reign to do anything they want. But they can always change the Constitution.
So, if that many people really want a national religion, and really want to impose their religious beliefs on everyone else, they should follow the proper procedure.
Amend the Constitution. Or follow the laws. Pick one.

The constitution is the document that protects the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Now matter how unpopular your views, congress cannot make a law that prohibits your from expressing them. They cannot forbid you to bear arms... you have a right to due process of law no matter how heinous your crime (a fact that conservatives wish that we forgot, nowadays).
And my absolute favorite protection is the protection from religious tyranny.... That was the main reason why this country was founded... not Christianity, but religious freedom!! No matter how many people want to hang a cross on public property and erect statues of the 10 commandments, I am garunteed that congress shall make no law or expression protecting or favoring one religion over the other.
I love this country. :-)

Religion, what ever one opinion is on it is in every ones life.
Everything is a religion. Not just to include the basics of Sunday go to meetings but any thing that has to do with faith, trust, practice. belief, use and devotion.
Surfers have their religion as do hunters, farmers, athletes, dead beat dads, dead beat moms, atheists, even Secular governments have their religion.
This statement above simply comes across as Christian bashing

As Benjamin Franklin said "democracy is two lions and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well armed sheep having something to say about the vote"
or something pretty close to that- i didn't look it up.

that is a very good question glad you asked
the church has no place in the politics of our government whatsoever and democracy cannot be maintained if they are allowed to interfere that must never be tolerated
