In a scenario where the Yankees lose and the Red Sox win - the Yankees lose a half game for a loss, while the Red Sox gain a half game for a win - therefore the Sox gain 1 game on the dreaded Yankees.
I'll say this much - if our Sox don't start putting together some consistent wins, they may not even make the wild card playoff spot.

Ayayay!
A win for you, plus a loss for them, gains you ONE game. Forget about Boston, the more they play, the closer they're getting to being out of the playoffs. Any combo of Yankee wins or Boston losses that add up to 30 something will knock them out of the playoffs (my guess is sometime in the next 2-3 weeks.
Epstein took an ill-advised hissy fit and extended vacation, and now all of Boston is paying for John Henry's idiotic personnel moves in Epstein's absence. Anyway, they weren't the best talent evaluators to begin with (Coco Crisp???), and 2004 was the biggest meltdown in sports history, so remember, it took the BIGGEST meltdown in sports history for the Red Sox to even get a whiff at a ring. Prepare for a long offseason and probably no shot at a ring until AFTER Jeter and A-Rod leave the Yankees (a WAYS off!).

1 full game. Each win and each loss is worth .5 of a game so:
(Yankee loss) .5 + (Red Sox win) .5 = 1 game change in the standings

everytime a non-first place team wins, they gain a half game. Every time they lose, they lose a half game.
everytime a first place team wins, they gain a half game on the rest of the division. Everytime the first place team loses, they lose a half game.
So, when New York beats Boston they gain a full game. (.5 for their win, and .5 for boston's loss)

1 full game
Boston gains .5 for win
Yankeess lose .5 for loss
= 1 full game
If boston won, gains .5
Yankees win gains .5
Net gain = 0 for both teams
Thats a very basic way to look at it, but it works

If Boston wins and Yanks loose: Boston gains one full game
If Yanks win and Boston looses: Yanks gain one full game
Half a game can only be gained or loosed if only one of the teams plays: ex.. if boston wins and yanks dont play: then they get a half a game... get it?
