1. Who are they? Liberals? You seem to be putting your biases out for review.

2. Sometimes when we face an uncomfortable situation about how we feel, one reaction is to deny the feeling entirely. This can result in the person's becoming totally against whatever it is that's making them uncomfortable. "If I make enough noise, it'll go away and I won't have to deal with my feelings about it."

This can take place in areas of personal relationships, religion, politics, etc. It is an unfortunate part of the human condition. One example that took place in 1930's Germany was that Christian neighbors did turn on their Jewish neighbors because their positive feelings for the Jews made them uncomfortable and vulnerable given the existing conditions at the time. Of course, there were many that helped their Jewish, Rom and other neighbors escape the Nazi purges.

That being said, there is certainly the case that someone is being entirely truthful with themselves and society at large when they express their feelings, pro or con, about something. Their opinion should be respected even if you may disagree with them.
