The rythem of the song makes or breakes it depending on the mood of the listener. While I am driving to work, if the song id too slow I will change the station. One you have the rythem and a great beat, the way the song is sung is next. The words don't matter so much as a good harmony and a pure sound, if all you are doing is screaming theres no sound, just noise. Bands like Evanesance had great rythem and a wonderful sound.

Strong Bass and Drums in the beginning. Sweet Gutair solo in the middle to the end. Vocals that are strong, but not screamo. Ohhhh and if you can add in a blusy- piano solo in at one point of another, thats sweet.

Usually the harmonies, esp. keyboards and voice - I also like songs with heavy bass.
It really depends a lot on the genre of music.
