In the story, Diana Moon-Glampers shoots Harrison and the ballerina with a 10-gauge and they die almost instantly. However, considering Harrison's immense strength, a 10-gauge may very well not have killed Harrison. Did Vonnegut have a reason for choosing the 10-gauge over the 12-gauge? Also, why a double barrel? Thank you in advance.

The 10 ga. is the biggest shotgun you can get anymore. The reason it was a double is because they never made very many10's in anything but single or double barrel. A few companies make pumps and autos but the double is the classic movie shotgun. It just looks better.
The guages from biggest to smallest: 10,12,16,20,28 and .410

A 10-gauge shotgun is more powerful than a 12-gauge. In general the lower the gauge number, the larger the caliber.

I haven't read the story but double-barreled shotguns are more common than pump-action or over-under shotguns, so that may be the reaon for the double barrel.
