Fate is simply what happens. Destiny is one's particular path.
It's his fate to be born with one leg. It's his destiny to be a world class runner nonetheless.
Or am I stretching it?

In the dictionary the two words are not far apart in meaning, but they certainly carry a different emotional resonance. Destiny sounds much more inspiring. The distinctions run deeper than verbal legerdemain such as calling old age the "golden years." Fate and Destiny are different, I think. Destiny is higher; it has more to do with one's potential, or dharma, or divine plan. Fate seems to imply that you have no control whatsoever over what will happen. Fate has more of a negative connotation whereas destiny has a more positive connotation.

I actually wrote a paper on this in college once, so here goes...

Fate is something that would be considered preordained. It's something that happens TO you, and no matter what you do you can't stop it. For example, it's everyones' Fate to die. There is nothing that will change that.

Destiny is something a little more flexible. It changes depending on the choices you make throughout your life. It's the goal at the end of your journey.

I think fate is the road to your destiny. Your destiny is the final destination of your fate.
(for lack of a better example)
It might be your fate to be a preacher, but it's your destiny to serve God.
If you're a soldier, it may be your fate to die on the battle Field but it was your destiny to have defended what you believed in.
