This is a serious question! Would a sedan really hurt anyone? i mean, it's so small! Momentum = mass x velocity^2, so.....even if the velocity of the sedan is great (i.e. 50mph) the small mass would make the momentum tiny!

And since the momentum is small, then no one gets hurt when it hits.

My question is based on an 8 yr old child.

Is it alright for an 8yr old to get hit by a sedan?

First I have to admit that your question is somewhat amusing..lol..

Second momentum=mass*velocity not velocity^2

In order to explain how strong the hit would be I will compare a sedan hitting a little girl to a girl getting hit by a baseball. I think you know that a baseball can be very dangerous if thrown towards someone at a fast speed. Especially of you hit their head.

So if a sedan weighs 950 kg and it is going at 50/hour...The momentum would be about 13000 kg*m/s.

A baseball that weighs 650 grams and is going at 45 km/h would have a momentum of about 8 kgm/2.

lol..that would meen that the force of the sedan compared to the baseball would be 1625 times of that of a baseball. So imagine feeling the pain of having 1625 baseballs going at 45 km/h coming at you at one time. Wouldn't that hurt?

I hope that made you understand how strong the impact would be.

A Honda Civic (a small car) weighs about 2600 lbs (or 1180 kg). If that car is going at 20 mph (8.9 m/s), it would hit a child with a force of 10502 kg m/s of momentum if applied evenly. Luckily for a child, they will not absorb the full amount of that momentum, but even a fraction is lethal.

In this case, the important note is that the car weighs about 50 times more than the child.

Hmm..something tells me your common sense just isn't working here!

First of all momentum (p) is equal to mass (m) x velocity (v).

If object 1 ( a sedan, say with a mass of 4,000 lbs) is traveling at a velocity of 50 mph, and obejct 2 (the 8 year old child, say 60 lbs) is stationary.

Then m1v1=m2v2
for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

m1v1= 4,000x50 = 20,000

then m2v2=20,000

but we know m2=60, therefore dividing 60 into 20,000, we get v2= 333 mph.

Hmmm...I think that would hurt just a little.

AS you dont know what you are talking about, a sedan is a 4 door car. Most small sedans weigh close to 2000 pounds which means lots of damage to a human body.

Look at the relative mass. Mass of small car=1000 kg vs. mass of child=50 kg.

Since the mass of the child is so small, the momentum of the car would cause the child to instantly accelerate, causing a great deal of trauma.

You must be kidding?
You talking about a sedan chair?
Think of a bullet. Very small mass. Now it's all about speed.
If you got hit by a bowling ball doing 50mph. Think you wouldn't get hurt?

Mass of a car is not small as you have said. It is quite significant. Even the most lightest car will have a significant mass sufficient enough when combined with a velocity more than 20 mph to hurt any human being.

(Serious answer for a serious question!)

If it became an entire coincidence: end, get out, call an ambulance, help the youngster, await ambulance to p.c.. up the youngster. what number years for manslaughter? i might want to be apologetic about killing that child a lot. it really is this variety of user-friendly mistake... i imagine we do not have autos, we ought to continuously have maglev trains. i comprehend now that rushing is stupid.. It negative aspects lives, and negative aspects fines. yet some human beings, they do no longer comprehend what they're doing... i do not comprehend what call this form of mentality, yet we've all had it once. it really is an same as no longer donning your seat belt. convenience-over-protection form of mentality.

this is so wrong. you don't need math just morals. i've seen a grown man get hit by a car doing 30 and it broke his hip. a sedan doing 50 that hits an 8 year would shatter that kid's skull.

If a car travelling at 5 mph cause $300 worth of damage to fender of another vehicle, I'd hate to imaging the price of hitting an infant.
