My experience:
I graduated in 2003 with a BA in English. I got a job in pubilshing right away doing customer service, but then the jobs were outsourced. I temped for a little while but was rehired as a mega-manager, but then I was let go because the project I was working on was closed. After that, I had the worst time finding a fulfilling job, so I found love instead. Because of that, I moved to Michigan, where there are no jobs at all. Now I serve coffee and I've applied to get my Masters degree and will go on to get my doctorate. I went from $40,000/year to $7.00/hour. Many other English majors I know are either teaching or unemployed and most are dissatisfied with their situation.

You will need to double major in English and something else, such as journalism, to really do something worthwhile with your degree. Even my MA in English friend who went to Stanford isn't making that much in publishing and she still needs help with her rent.
