Try to research about the dietary sources of the Amazon natives... I think it is interesting... Look for papers from Katharine Milton and Gross (I forgot his first name),... look for researches in ecological anthropology.

Good golly, there are an endless stream of ideas

Here are some controversial topics:
- why Mexico fails to thrive economically, when it is so close to a vast market in the United States?
- why can't Latin American countries abandon their drug production?
- why is Venezuela such a poor country, with such vast oil reserves?
- How do Latin American countries see the USA as a friend and foe?

How about some positive topics:
- Describe the growing ethanol market in Brazil and how did it get started?
- Describe the unique cultural favors of Latin America

Try looking into the effects of globalization on certain peoples/countries. There is a lot of recent anthropological scholarship out there as it is a fairly new topic...

Are you studying for a M.A.L.A.S.? If you are, I have a suggestion that's up to your level:
What about Latin-American syncretic ("mix-") religions like Santeria, Vodun ("Voodoo") and Candomblé?
You say you can research, so I'll give you one name, for the rest you are on your own. The name is Roger Bastide. He is the author of a famous book on African-American religions in Brazil.
