can a regular game boy and a game boy color use the same games?

i got my son a game boy pocket for his birthday and don't know what games are compatable since there are gameboy and gameboy color games.

I'll explain it as simple as can be. The Original Gameboy of which you speak and the Gameboy Pocket will only play the original gameboy games. Not the color ones. Since the Gameboy color came out later then theses two, the origianl gameboys cannot play the color games, cuz it has no color screen. However the Gameboy Color will play all the Gameboy games from its time, meaning it will play the origianl Gamboy games and the Gamboy pocket. The Gameboy pocket and the regular Gameboy is the same system, except the Gameboy pocket is just a slimmer model. Same guts though.
