This is the "silent protagonist" model, found in other console adventure-style games like Zelda and Chrono Trigger. The idea is that by keeping the main character silent, it allows the player to closer connect to the character, making a more in depth gaming experience. Sometimes, it doesn't work, as you have noticed.

One of the reasons I think it works is that silence is deadly. If you don't know what a person is thinking, it just makes them that much more bad-...donkey when they kill several hundred aliens or moblins or slimes.
