I have made sure that all rotten veggies and fruits are gone, and the only ones I do have are all in the refrigerator. Why are the fruit flys still not going away??

I know people who keep fruit flies (to do research on). To deal with the inevitable escapes they mix some alcohol with vinegar (they say apple vinegar works best, but normal vinegar works as well), put a few drops of dishwashing fluid or whatever soap in there and put it out in little cups. The alcohol/vinegar smell to the flies is like rotten fruit, so they are attracted to it. And because the surface tension is much reduced by the soap they drown in the water, also the alcohol helps killing them off.

But probably you just have the leftover adults from your last "breeding experiment" unless you give them new food they should all be gone in max three weeks anyway.

The absolute best way to rid your house of fruit flies is to clean the place! Get rid of all the fruits you have sitting out; wash them in the sink, and put them in the fridge (if they are good), or throw them away. Clean the areas where the fruit was kept, and put up some fly strips... (they aren't only for houseflies!)... after a few days, (their eggs may still be around. You may be ready to bring new fruit into the house.

If you love to leave your fruit out, because they do beautify a healthy home, wash all your fruits & vegetables (that you leave out), not just before you eat them, but when you bring them home! Commonly the eggs of the flies in question, come from the fruits, as they where picked from the farm... complete with fruit fly eggs!

I wash all my F&V when they come home, (or off the trees in the back yard), and again, before I eat them!

Fruit flies rely on a constant supply of sugar to survive. So, to get rid of them you have to eliminate ALL possible food sources--not just rotten veggies and fruits, but anything with sugar that they can get at, right down to cleaning all the surfaces. You'll know you've found whatever they were surviving on when you stop seeing them (they die quickly). Hope that helps! Oh, the other possibility is that you're somehow bringing in more fruit flies (for example, if you work in a restaurant kitchen or something).

Fruit flies don't just lay eggs in fruit. That is a common place for them, but they also do so in bread, veggies, the garbage, or in any other food you've got sitting out (or even in your cupboards). Also, check your pet's food. Keep it covered if they're not eating it.

Try getting some fly paper. The more of the adult flies you can catch, the fewer eggs can be laid.

Good luck!

Well the ones that you are still seeing may just be the adults that recently emerged. They will only live for about a week or so, so they will be gone eventually. You also have to be careful with things like opened beer bottles, spilled things like jam, honey etc, and make sure to keep your plug in the sink. I have noticed that after a fruitfly incident in my house, that I successgully cleaned up, they were still coming out of my kitchen sink up to 3 weeks later. So what I did was put the plug in well, filled the sink with hot water, then pulled the plug to flush away any eggs, larvae, or pupae that may have been in the pipes....and presto, they were gone!

By keeping the fruits in the fridge. They will keep fresher, and longer.

They apparently have found something else to feast on! Try cleaning with vinegar - it's a natural deterrent!
