If you are running windows, then run MSCONFIG and look to see what programmes are set to run at startup. Also look in the programs/startup folder to see if theres anything in there.

If you're still concerned that something may be running, then start Task Manager and see whicj applications or processes are running. If you don't know what a process is, then search for it on yahoo or google and you should get an explanation.

To see which programs are starting on your computer go to Start>Run and type in msconfig and hit enter. Click on the start up tab and you can see those programs you can disable. Do not disable your virus/firewall or spyware software unless you plan to uninstall them.

To see what processes are currently running hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and click on the processes tab, this list a bit more cryptic but if you want to know what a process is just do an internet search uinder the file name to get a better idea.

some programs to consider for help in cleaning up (and speeding up) your computer are

http://www.buttuglysoftware.com/ for CleanCache to clean up the various cache folders on your computer.

and http://www.ccleaner.com/ Ccleaner which can clear up bad links and entries in your registry.

and http://spybot.com/ Spybot to clear up spyware and malware on your computer.

With each of these programs read the documentation...

Get any of the following:
Norton Antivirus
Spyware Doctor
Ad-Aware

search for them at www.thepiratebay.org. And then download a copy of Azureus to get them all free. ;)
