When you turn 18, all of a sudden you're seen as being an adult. Your doctor cannot disclose information about you to your parents, you have to sign for everything, you can vote, you can get a credit card, you can buy things off of infomercials, you can buy cigarettes, etc. It seems big at first, but there's not much of a difference otherwise.

You should've matured enough by age 18 so you can be more
in charge of making decisions that affect your life.
People use the age 18 as a measuring stick. It's a legal age.
With it you're expected to behave as an adult. Your actions or
inactions are judged more seriously. You aren't allowed to
escape justice because your age signifies your maturity. You're
libel for your deeds.
You are held to a higher regard for as responsibility goes.

Age 18 is a gateway into adulthood while still having a foot in (or clear memories of) childhood. My daughter made it to age 23 before being killed in a wrongful death in 2004. At age 17, she'd graduated from high school and decided to try college. In the state of Missouri, age 17 is considered "adult" (partly to be harsher on sentencing if crimes are committed) so she was somewhat emancipated; however, in Tennessee, where she moved to attend college with the man she thought of as her soul mate, she was not allowed to sign for a P.O. Box, apartment rental, or any other contract because she was under 18. That's one aspect of difference--you can take on more responsibility. On an emotional or developmental note, there is a bit more freedom from parental rule--they may still attempt to tell you what to do, but they are no longer legally able to force you to comply. You are at the low end of the totem pole in terms of "adult" decisions (which can be an advantage in some ways--a semblence of innocence that makes allowances for error)--sort of like being a high school freshman all over again, but you are at the high end of the totem pole in the eyes of those younger than you, who may look to you for guidance. I see the age of 18 as a bridge or crossroads, where decisions you make will impact you long into your adult existence. Cut your parents some slack, though--they have to adjust to the idea of their beloved child turning adult and growing away from them in so many ways.

Other than being allowed to vote and buy cigarettes, there is no difference. I don't even smoke because it is so nasty. Being 21 is better because I can buy alcohol, (I like to have an occasional drink). Now that is worth it.

At 18 you can buy smokes and get into clubs! Kinda cool, but until you turn 21 and can buy liquor, it's not very exciting!

You are officially an adult and can do whatever you want without the consent of anyone. You are officially an adult, and it's the beginning of a life full of responsibility and accountability- it's all downhill from there lol

The good:
You can register to vote (I did the same week).
You can buy cigarettes.
You can buy dirty magazines.
You can be featured in dirty magazines (but who'd want to?).
The bad:
You can be tried as an adult (no, I'm not talking from experience).
