I got in the car to go to lunch today and it wouldn't start. I put the key in the ignition and turned it and there was a sort of a "thunk" noise, then nothing. The headlights, turn signals, wipers and radio aren't working now, but the dome light and the door ajar/headlights on beeper work. I'm guessing alternator, but I've never had one make a thunk noise before. Anybody have a clue?

Start with cleaning the battery terminals. This means remove the cable end from the battery and brush them and the post clean, then replace them and secure them very well. If there is a heave deposit of corrosion on these terminals, the copper strap may be damaged beyond repair. In this case for a PERMANENT repair, a replacement of the end will be necessary.

you're problem is that it's a FORD! hahaha. I've had one before (a Tempo) & had nothing but expensive problems! I could either be the alternator, battery or a belt. I know it wouldn't be the starter cause you would still have all lights & just a small click when you turned the key. Take your car in somewhere & get it checked out.

Funny you should ask because I was a pro. mechanic for quite a while and my mother's car just did that to me, and I thought it would turn out to be a connection problem espesially with the wet wether at the time, but the battery turned out to be toast!

I'm thinking dead battery. could be just a bad connection (corrosion) at the battery terminals or solenoid. check before you buy a battery. have you tried to jump start or push start it if it has a standard transmission?
