I used to think so, however I was recently blindsided by a good friend. I think I excused a lot of behavior based on her past. She lost her mother when she was 3 and her father when she 13, so I felt that some of the selfish things she did were based on this. She of course, realising that everyone let her get away with it, took advantage of it and people around her, keeping the wool pulled over our eyes. **** hit the fan this past July and every lie she has told is out in the open and people are really angry and disappointed in her.
Needless to say, often times peoples real character doesn't come out until you've known them awhile. Unfortunately, it makes it harder to forgive them for any slights against you once you'e let them into your life.

I run about 50-50...when my mood is good, i attempt to find something, at least one thing, good about everyone...but other times i am in a mood where i hate the world and everyone in it...these moods drastically effect my first impressions of people.
