Annual leave is paid leave or vacation. As you work at a job, you earn paid time off. When you take the time, you're paid as if you had been working.

Sabbatical leave is commonly granted to professors and others in academia. It's a year-long release from normal teaching duties to travel or to conduct research. Many institutions grant sabbatical leave to tenured faculty every seventh year.

The name sabbatical, by the way, comes from the same root as "sabbath," or the day in many religions on which work should not be done.

Not counting academic sabbaticals, workers in the U.S. lag behind most other countries in annual leave. The average for an American worker is 10 paid days per year, and there are no legal requirements for employers to grant any paid vacation to employees. About one-eighth of U.S. employers do not provide paid leave.

In other countries, strong unions have set standards for annual leave. Some countries have legislated minimum paid vacation time. In Europe, workers in most countries receive at least 20 days of paid vacation per year. In many U.S. companies, employees would have to work 15 to 20 years before being entitled to that much annual leave.

As I am to understand an annual vacation is just for time off the job. R&R as it were. But Sabbatical leaves tend to be a little longer in duration, and tend to involve learning new skills and or training. Sometimes people get sent on "Sabbatical leaves" when they get a little looney at work(if ya know what I mean).
