The beginning of the pattern says to use a zigzag stitch and to "overcast" the raw edges. Which stitch do I use?

If your machine has a zigzag stitch, use it to stitch very close to the raw edges of the material to prevent fraying. If you have an overcast stitch, you can use that, too.

(actually, you can use any back-and-forth stitch that your machine has, including decorative stitches).

If you have an older machine that only does straight stitching, stitch a line about 1/8 inch from the raw edge of the material and then cut it with a pinking shears.
