You stomach IS at the left, upper abdomen with a portion of it tucked under the ribs. The pain is IN your stomach. There are couple of things this suggests. I'm not thinking diverticulitis because the crampy pain felt is known for being at the sigmoid colon and would be felt lower in the left abdomen. Could possibly be pancreatitis, particularly if the pain radiates to your back. However, you cannot get a diagnosis online. It would be a good idea to see your health care provider for further evaluation.
For the person who suggested colonoscopy: A colonoscopy is useless for diagnosing gastric (stomach) conditions. The colonoscope goes only as far as the colon; it doesn't pass through the small intestine, which is between the colon and the stomach. This scope's not long enough. And a colonoscope could never pass through the pyloric sphincter (the valve that allows stomach contents to empty into the first part of the small intestine). Even if it were long enough to reach, it's too big. If any "scoping" is to be done, it would be an upper GI (not a lower as you suggested) and it would be an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy).

The part of the large intestine that would be in that area makes a "turn" right below the ribs on the left and you could be experiencing diverticulitis. It actually feels like a tooth-ache in your left-lower quadrant of your belly. That would mean a little pocket in your colon was inflamed with something like a seed, or popcorn, or something that didn't get digested properly. You can take something to make your bowels move and drink alot of water, along with aspirin (take with food) for the pain and inflammation. But if you have a low grade fever and more pain than you want to deal with, go to the doctor for an antibiotic. God Bless.

I don't know where this retired nurse came from but I'm glad she never cared for me. First of all diverticulitis is usually in the LOWER left of the abdomen or the LLQ. You seem to be talking upper left or ULQ and my first thoughts would be pancreas. Meantime since you do not know what is causing this and there is a possibility there is bleeding involved you should NEVER take aspirin as this can increase that bleeding. Again, I'm not too sure on this nurse person.

How often does this happen? Has it just happened lately and is there for only a short time or does it happen every time you eat? What are you eating when this happens? Sometimes when I drink energy drinks without having any food in me I get the same thing. It could be sortof like that depending on how the above questions are answered.
