Alot depends on how well you take care of yourself. Remain somewhat active, eat a balanced diet, drink lots of water, take the medications the doctor prescribes and you might recover as quickly as two weeks.
Alot also depends on the severity of the pnuemonia itself, how much of your lung/s was involved? Obviously the more severe the infection, the longer the recovery.

At that age it's not an easy thing to recover from quickly, and often reocurrs. If he's a non-smoker, he's got a better chance of recovery, but pneumonia is nasty (as you know) and follow up appointments will be essential.
It's good he's fit (well previously). My grandmother (pneumonia got her in the end) took a good couple of months to fully recover from the first time she got it at about 75 years of age.

I'm 23 and I had it when i was 18, it took two months before I was completely better. With his age I would say longer and that he should take it easy! Also, he will have a compromised immune system for some time after. Have him avoid germy places planes and such and wash wash wash those hands!

The older you are the harder it is to recover from pneumonia. It lowers your immune system, making it very easy to catch other illnesses. Making recovery long and difficult.
