I live and work in rural, northern Michigan. The company I work for just lost out on a huge landscaping and irrigation job because we don't have enough (any) blacks, latinos, hispanics, native Alaskans, Asians, American Indians, or other Pacific Islanders employed here.

The only ones in the above group that live here are American Indians and the all work at the casinos!!!

Does anyone else think this is racist, any why is this legal???

yea i think that it should be the better person or better company in your case that gets the job. don't you know what naacp stands for? national association against Caucasian people. things shouldn't be based on color or creed just who gets the job done. i think it's a form of reverse racism.

Hasn't our society always operated as though there is an NAAWP? You might want to avoid the stereotype that all Native American's work at the casino...

More and more companies are valuing the idea of diversity in the workforce. True, for some it's more lip service than it is true commitment, but it's a growing trend, and society's commitment to the inclusion of people who have traditionally been excluded.

It's hard to be blindsighted by something like that. You are forced to question your own feelings of entitlement, and your own feelings of frustration regarding issues like Affirmative Action and other race, gender, ethnicity, etc. equity programs. You question whether simply recruiting and hiring "a bunch of minorities" so that you will get the next big contract is fair, dignified, or necessary. And you know that many American companies have already done this and it didn't work very well, but it's because the company didn't have a true understanding of diversity, nor a true commitment to valuing it in the workplace.

So the solution? Consider what you can do as a company and as a town to make it a more welcoming place. Consider the people who are already in the company, and whether it is a place where each person's opinion is valued and whether there is room for a dissenting voice. Consider that Diversity in the Workplace is still a relatively new concept that not every company, agency, etc., has quite grasped yet. Consider that it is still a step forward, even though it may seem like a step backward.

No there is no NAAWP. And what you are talking about is for some reason called reverse discrimination. There is also no United Caucasian(White Person) College Fund, etc..etc... If whites wanted to start/have organizations as those, then it is racist or discriminatory against the minorities. My question is, when does the majority stand up and say enough is enough? Why are the American Indians called American Indians when they where here first? They have the right to be called Indian Americans...I thought if you were an American that you should have America in your name first....ie....American African, American Mexican, etc..
And speak English in America, we shouldn't have to press 1 to talk on the phone....Our printing costs for the government would be half of what it is now if we went back to plain English on all documents. Sorry about the soapbox....

This is a joke, right? Wrong. I know more than my share of Caucasians that subscribe to reverse racism. How trite. Unfortunately, and it's sooo f*cking stupid to begin with, that people are AUTOMATICALLY "judged" based on their skin color vs. their competence. I've worked with some Caucasians that didn't have a clue but were supervisors and I've worked with some Blacks that were just plain bullsh*ttin around - and I wondered, how did this happen? I am Black, African-American, whatever - I don't get caught up in semantics, I know my orgin and history, thoroughly - and I believe that people should be recognized and selected based on their aptitude as well as their attitude but skin color, class, who your daddy is and where you live should absolutely be a moot point. Now, there is a NAAWP it's called the U.S. Government...my bad, correction, that is actually the NAARichWP. Peace...

I am white and from the UK but if I were black and from New Orleans for example, I would not want to be patronized by being given unfair advantages in the work place. I would however, want some decent and prompt help with the aftermath of the recent flooding there. It seems to me that your political leaders need to get their priorities right before the disease of racist political correctness pollutes the whole world.

Michigan law sttes that you must have a certain percentage of minority employees working for your company and if someone files a complaint with the department of labor and the allegations are founded they can shut the facility down or give the company hefty fines for improper business practice.

First off I can use affirmative action so please no offense any one.
Affirmative action was necessary at one time, now I feel it is a crutch. How can your company hire required minorities if they aren't there or they already have better jobs?
Is there a quota for white employees or can we just eliminate them all together.
