Is hard topic to find semantics for, if you are not of one specific discipline...
But I am gonna whale away at it with a few sledgehammers here .. and though I use some varied lingos brau.. I hold that I here speak from the hardearned delusions of my own experiences:
All levels of subtlebody awakening are fraught with trials .. integrating new perceptions... Trying to learn to make them useful... Not allowing a new inflated egocomplex to replace the old one .. to discern that "awakening" and "illumination" are far from being "enlightenment" .. or even "a gift to a special messenger"... they must be taken in stride .. assimilated .. and hopefully they dissolve the old ego .. rather than building a more intense problem .. a spiritually inflated ego...
totems are a very similar process ...
Okay ..lol .. I have said enough to get the mandatory peltings with rotten fruit , veggies, and dung .. lol .. such are intangible subject matters ..
addendum: .. one could .. sift some issues of "trials" .. to be on instinctive polarities of greed, lust , and anger .. I think profit of analysis can be had by such sifting .. but the compartments can be very lose in personal experience ... So I delude myself( as a delusion is almost anything we can't tangibly point to)

The Trials are a personal journey that each seeker must endure. It is more akin to a "dark night of the soul" than to any specific tasks that must be completed. It is up to the seeker's mentor or teacher to recognize & acknowledge these breakthroughs, and to elevate accordingly. This is how I have come to understand them through the occult traditions that I have personally explored. As for other traditions there may be a series of tasks to be performed, or specific "vision-quests" or otherworld journeys, or specific intitatory rites that must be endured; such as the "chilla." this is a 40 day a ritual retreat where you do nothing but play the drums. But these practices are as varied as the cultures from which they originate.

I understand that the Jedi learners had to undergo some kind of formal trials before becoming fully fledged Jedi Knights. Test of knowledge, perception, and ability. Something like that?

Or if you are on trial, you are actually getting sued.
So, don't know which one you want to know.
