I don't like the path that most musical "Icons" are taking these days. I mean... I'm all for freedom of expression, but enough is enough. What message are we trying to get across? I have been in music my entire life. Im a drummer in a So-Cal band called "Sound Alone" (Yes we're instrumental) and we cant decide whether to add lyrics to our music because we are afraid that the content of the words might get in the way. What do we want/not want to hear in music...?

Don't worry man, you're definitely not the only one who feels that way...I'm no expert on the rest of it but I can say that Hip Hop music has damn near lost all of it's meaning...Especially when there are songs out such as "Chain hang low" "Chicken Noodle Soup" and "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It". It's sad really that a musical style that was originally about expression and being non commercial is exactly that these days. Sadder even, is that as musicians we have a tool to enlighten the masses on a variety of subjects, but so few of us ever take that initiative and opt out in lew of a quick buck...

I think punk fans feel the same, not 100% positive though...

At either rate, if your band has a talented lyricist or two in it, then yes go for it...Even if not, more than likely whatever you write is going to be better or equal to what's being pumped out now...

Hope this answered the question.

I totally agree. People are sell-outs these days. I hate all of the "copy cat" artists now. I really hate all of the whiny so-called Punk. Try to keep your image the way you want. If it comes to the point when you want to add lyrics, do it. But, maybe make lyrics for the songs as a back up, whether you use them or not. Kinda like you have a song, and an instrumental version. Just an idea.

OMG! Yes I agree. If you go to BET right now, you will hear some guy talking about a girl with a big butt, how much ice they have or how they are a thug. Its not just the guys because girls will also talk about how tight there thing is or how good they are in bed. The world needs more Jill Scott's, Kem's and India Ari's. More people who talk about love, and about how we need to make sure that kids stay in school. I am not hating on anyone, but I am so tired of rappers talking about a girl shaking her *** and about how many "hoes" want them. I am just going to stop right here because I starting to get upset.

Music I can stand. Lyrics sometimes I can not find a meaning, as in Rap lyrics. Very offensive and meaningless. If your band is just instrumental, go ahead, love!..I prefer just the music, well structured, than a so-called artist insulting people supported by a ta-da-da-ta-da-da-.rythmless sound.

I totaly agree with you. Most music today is about girls and sex. theres no real meaning.

I think that your band should put words to your music. But try to write the songs with meaning. Own experiences will help you.

I agree with you completely!! Most of the words to the songs do not relate to the music and vice-versa. Rap, disguising itself as music, has infected the music scene and has given us nothing but a lot of garbled noise, crazy ideas, and awful "musicians."

Chow!!

Yeah, music has lost its meaning. Artists just write songs with no feeling. Although SOME do... it's very rare.
