You need to present samples of your writing about the topic to the magazine's editor when you apply for the job. If you have samples of work that has been published elsewhere ("clips), that's a plus. An active blog dedicated to the topic is also helpful.

You need to be able to write; you need to have something to say; you need someone to give you a job doing it. Your best bet is to enroll in some journalism classes. Writing columns is not something you start out doing. You have to establish some authority and credibility first so people will care what you have to say.

You need to have thorough and deep knowledge on the subject on which you are planning to write about.
