I try very hard to live daily with two consistent rules:
(1) The Golden Rule - "Do unto others as you would have them do to you also"
(2) "Whatever you do today you have to sleep with tonight"
It's served me well for 42 years all over the globe in multiple and sometimes tense cultural conflicts.
