I taught there as a visitor a few years ago.

Academics? It is just about the best there is. The students are incredibly smart -- so you will learn from your classmates as well as your professors.

A lot of the buildings are older & worn down -- but the setting is right on the Charles River giving a great view of Boston.

While it has a reputation of being an engineering school -- it also has one of the best Economics departments in the world and the #2 ranked undergraduate business school. Plus, you can take classes at Harvard if MIT doesn't offer it.

Cambridge/Boston is a great place to live -- especially for a college student.

I can't think of many schools I would choose over MIT.
