Amazing to read posts like: When was such and such famous historical figure born, or who invented ... Amazing. All one needs is the understanding that the dictionary and encyclopedia are in alphebetical order. Before we can post an answer, the questioner can have answer in hand. Some people have no drive for knowledge. Having it handed to them is much better for them. They don't want to have to think about which website to go to, what to type in, or even read the page. They just want someone to give them the answer with a pretty bow on it. They don't want to earn the information and of course, the information will flitter out of their brains to be replaced with the level 4 cheat code for Madden NFL 2006. You know, something more important than knowing how to multiply or what happened in WWII.

Sometimes they aren't taught to use an encyclopedia. I know that students today use a lot of online sources for research instead of hard copy sources such as books, magazines, and newspapers. I've heard one student ask where he could find a book. Boy, did I cringe! The Internet has made instant gratification in the way of information very easy, so sometimes, they wish to get the answer in an easy way instead of searching for it. It's not that they're lazy, but it is what they're used to.

Shhhhh! It's something called 'l a z y' and it has reached epidemic proportions. It is truly astonishing that people won't even use the spell check, never mind the Wikipedia or yahoo search, when 90% of the questions can be resolved through those sources.
But, if everyone did that, we wouldn't have the fun of shaking up our grey matter and remembering some of the answers that they could have found so easily.

It was amusing at first but it quickly gets old. Plus there are alot of questions that seem like the answer should be common knowledge. It befuddles me to the point where I wonder if people ever go to school anymore, or do they just sit at home all day trying to get an education through Yahoo Answers. Scary.

Because they are too lazy to look it up, never thought of looking in an encyclopedia, or didnt know that they provided encyclopedias online.

It's not that people don't own one, or that they lazy, it's because it's easier that way. Life is getting easier and easier, why not take advantage of it. It's like your saying, why do people drive from one distance to a next? I mean why would someone want to walk when they have options? So to answer your question I would say it happens because people have choices.

Sometimes what I'm curious about is either too specific for an encyclopedia entry or it's too much information to sift through.

That's a good question. Maybe askers think someone will give them some information they can't find. Who knows?
