Check out two trade groups- www.ises.com which is a group of event planners and also www.nace.com which is made up of banquet/event coordinators within the food industry. They would be a good source of information about this career and they have job placement capabilities. You can also find local chapters. They have monthly meetings, which you can attend as a guest. They will also list local members, which will allow you to talk to people in the industry.
Many colleges offer event coordination as a major. Try a placement office for information.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career. a good salary would be in the $40,000 to $65,000 depending on the size and scope of the events. For example if you handle events with over 30,000 attendees you would be towards the upper scale, under $1000 on the lower one.

I highly depends on your location. City, rural, where? Please clarify and I can give you a better estimate. For instance, where I live it is very rural and the cost of living is low so the average event coordinator is usually combined with public relations and marketing / advertising. The average offer is between $28,000 to $45,000 depending on experience. Yet travel North from here 2 hours and the average is between $42,000 to $60,000. Research your area and talk with local businesses who have a coordinator similar to the position you would like to offer or are being offered.

If the event is a PTA meeting then little .. if the event is the Super Bowl then lots .... that is one of those job descriptions that means little outside of specific context.
