It depends on what you are looking for, there are several criteria that could be used here. The largest lake by volume of the water in it, largest water surface, deepest etc. Also do you consider salty water bodies that are land locked as lakes? Oh and don’t forget the largest lake constructed by humans. See it's difficult to answer your question lake that.
Anyway, the largest body of water inside land is Caspian Sea which accidently also has the greatest surface area. The lake with the largest water volume is lake Baikal in Russia.
I imagine this will be changing soon with global warming doing it’s thing a lot of lakes in Alaska are gonna get uncovered as glaciers melt which will put them on top of the list.

National Geographic magazine said that Lake Baikal in Russia is the world's largest lake by volume. I don't know about surface area.
Without a specific definition of "lake", I'd say the world's smallest lake is a drop of water.
Hope this helps!

The largest lake in the world is misnamed the Caspian Sea. If you're looking for a lake that is appropriately named, the largest would be Lake Superior. The smallest lake? Who knows? Probably Billy-Joe-Jim-Bob's Lake in BFE, Georgia or something like that...
