Your mate is wrong. Sheppards Pie is for lamb. Cottage is for other meats.

I don't know if this will help settle an arguement but my Family has enjoyed Sheppards Pie for a Long time. And in our case, it has always been made with Lamb in it. And Please stop arguing, it's not good for you 2. Smile at each other and Kiss and Make up!

I think ur probably right (thou i call it Sheppard's pie whatever meat is in it), never really thought about it. Probably was called that decades ago but through common use with other meats, Sheppard's pie may not necessary have to have lamb in it.

Sorry, I've never even heard of cottage pie. I've always called it shepard's pie--the kind with ground beef.

Beef for Shephard and Lamb for Cottage is the way it goes....but frankly....who cares, a rose by any other name would taste so sweet , if you like to eat meat.
