This Southern California Girl loves Slovakia! Particularly, the natural terrain, lil' villages, & the villagers, of course. The wholesome, simple lifestyle is charming. The central location in Europe makes it a great place to travel from.

Slovakia is not set up for American Tourism; however, there is a fair share of Europeans touring. Americans here tend to be missionaries.

What I don't like...the ridiculous lack of regard for health and human life. Come on people give up the smoking and extremely hazardous driving! The cost of staple items, e.g. food, clothing, hygiene products, cosmetics is far too high for the low wages earned by the Slovaks. The food can be delicious but it's missing a more healthful variety of options to eat. There is much to improve as far as services go. They are still a bit stuck in the old way of doing things. And, much in need of a big brother or sister country to guide them.

For people who want to hike or cycle. I say come to Slovensko! In winter, come skiing here like other Europeans do. And to the single guys out there...goodness gracious, come in summer. The young ladies are just waiting for you. You will see some of the best figures ever and very sensuous looking chicks. For the single ladies, from what I understand, Czechoslovak women are the most sexually satisfied in the world. Based on my experience and the Slovakman that I married ten yrs. ago, I would say that study was probably accurate. But I must say, there is tons of competion in Slovakia, so snatch up your Slovak elsewhere like I did.

For people who want to come to the country of their heritage..don't be afraid. Just do it. There are many lovely things to see and day trips and the hospitality of the folk is quite wonderful. You must venture to the country, not just the city for that typical Slovak Hospitality. Enjoy the coffee even if you are not a coffee drinker, same goes for the beer and booze. They'll expect you to drink up. Na Zdravie!

I would imagine most non-Europeans would no little about Slovakia unless they are ice hockey fans or another type of tourist, recently typified in the movie "Hostel", which I'd rather not mention directly.

I just got back from a great two week trip to Slovakia. My father thought I was going to Yugoslovakia and my Slovakian friend who I met in China, frequently had to explain to Chinese where his country was much less have the fun of listening to other people's impressions. Most of my college educated friends in California did not know where the country was. But anyhow, I had a great time. Spent a week in Bratislava then went to Banska Bystrica (sp?), Banska Stauvnica, Bresno (my friend's home), Levoca, and this idyllic blessed little valley with a town where his grandparents live.

What do I think after two weeks as a Chinese American policy graduate student who loves geography and history? (I'm a particular type of non-European and thought I should qualify that) I think it is a country which is struggling with it's identity and in an interesting economic period where a lot of foreign investment is coming in, creating growth after years of instability, but this foreign investment and political influence of the west is an affront to the more traditional and perhaps more Soviet educated people, mostly out of Bratislava. For travellers, I think it is a really great place to get away from the crowds, go hiking and camping in the Tatras and see the castles and land which have been the crossroads for Celts, Romans, Germanic peoples, Mongol/Tatars, Hungarians, and of course the Slavs. I also enjoyed seeing interesting remnants of the Hungarian empire and if you have a friend there it is so nice to be treated to a very hospitable traditional culture with great country style food and a fair amount of alcohol. The handicrafts are pretty amazing too. I hope the first thing people learn about Slovakia is not from this recent movie that was released.

The less industrialized portion of former Czechoslovakia, had struggled somewhat to catch up industrially with Western Europe. Mountainous, beautiful. I know almost nothing about the culture, though.
