If heard that not everyone is allergic to poison ivy...What about mosquitoes?

Hey Forever Lost,

That depends on what the mosquito is carrying, and what they bit before you. It might even depend on the part of the country you were raised in, and where you are being bitten. If you mean those nasty bumps, I never get them. However if the flying beast is carrying West Nile or Malaria - that I am allergic to.

Here are some websites that talk about Mosquitoes.

Nope, not everyone is allergic. When someone who is not allergic to poison ivy or mosquito bites gets bitten, he or she will still have a non-specific immunological response. Inflammation occurs when more blood starts to flow to the site of the puncture or infection so that phagocytes (white blood cells) can destroy any invading pathogens. Some people will have an allergic reaction to mosquitoes or poison ivy because at the onset of inflammation, the body's humoral immune response releases large quantities of histamines. (The humoral immune system is generally in charge of recognizing pathogens and launching a strong attack upon them). In this case, an entire body reaction can occur (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling). This is why people who are very allergic to mosquitoes or poison ivy will take benedryl after they come into contact with a pathogen- benedryl is a strong, concentrated anti-histamine, and will tell the immune system not to launch attack by preventing release of histamines. People who are not very allergic to mosquitoes or poison ivy may want to lay off the anti-histamines because the secondary humoral immune response can speed up the healing process for them. This is only advisible if one knows he or she is not allergic to mosquitoes or poison ivy. The price to pay: Lots of itching now, but the bites heal more quickly!

If you're truly allergic to mosquitos, you get these nasty swellings like chicken pox (at the very least). My sister and brother do that. My other sister never gets mosquito-bite bumps at all--she must be totally un-allergic to mosquitos.

nope on both accounts. people react to being bitten that is true, but for most it doesn't set off an immunological response. those aren't fun. you get big welts and hives and those aren't fun at all
