It helps him keep his balance,.. JUST LIKE OUR ARMS
Notice how we sway our arms in different when climbing a rock, mountain
Basically leopard's tail help it by

-providing an opposing force to Centripetal and Centrifugal forces that generate during the movements

The snow leopard uses its long tail (which is 75 to 95 percent the length of its body) for two purposes: to help keep its balance and to protect itself from the cold, which it does by wrapping the tail around its body while resting. It also has an enlarged nasal cavity and well-developed chest cavity so that it can warm air before it enters the lungs. Cushions of hair on its paws prevent the snow leopard from sinking into the snow and protect it from the cold, rough ground in winter and the sun-heated rocks in summer.
Leopards rest in trees during the day and their long thick tail helps them with their balance.
The tail is long and thick, and acts as a rudder -- enabling the animal to leap up to 50 feet. The snow leopard also uses his tail as a muffler -- wrapping it around the face and nose during sleep to protect the nose and lungs from freezing.
The snow leopard uses its thick, furry tail--up to 1 meter (40 inches) in length, nearly as long as the rest of its body--to aid in balancing, much the same way that humans stretch their arms out for balance when they walk across a stream on a log, for example.

Its tail plays a significant role to balance its weight while running. Whenever it want to move to right, it moves its tail to left and vice versa.
