Jill just tumbled which is a different verb entirely, although, of course, the end result is that neither was walking on the way down the hill. Still, Jill should have noticed the problem Jack was having with the downwards stretch and taken more care, don't you think?

Now the other problem with this story is the location of the well. No-one in their right minds digs a well at the top of the hill - that would just mean so much more digging to reach the water table. It should have been dug at the bottom of the hill, thereby preventing the steep uphill and downhill carrying of buckets which probably just lead to lawsuits, because crowns are expensive and a broken one costs mucho to repair, especially if the jewels came lose and got lost in the grassy knoll.
